As the legend goes, Ratcatcher is a mysterious pied piper hired by the town of Hamelin to rid it of a plague of rats. When the townspeople refuse to pay him for his work, he uses his magical pipe to lead their children away, never to be seen again. But what if that was not how it happened? What if there was more to the story? And what if he had a daughter that didn’t know who he was?
The second book in the Willow Chronicles series tells a story of Ada, a twelve year old girl moving into a new city, struggling to make new friends, while helping her dad rid the city of the rats. But when the nightmares come, the town falls ill with the shadow sickess, and her dad gets arrested by the secret police, it is up to her to set things right.
The book is set in 1989 in Czechoslovakia, at the brink of the Velvet Revolution and the beginning of the end of the communist regime.
It tells a story of compassion, mental illness, and forgivness. It highlights the importance of friendship and love. And rats, there are a lot of rats.
